AIOH Chapter Meeting – South Australia – April 2024
It's time for our first Chapter meeting in SA for 2024! Get ready for some awesome discussions, networking, and maybe even a few surprises. Let's kick off the year with energy and excitement.
Prepare to be captivated as Kate Gibbs takes the stage to discuss her ground breaking occupational hygiene project. Focused on examining respirable and inhalable dust exposure to workers during the drilling of fibre reinforced foam urethane (FFU) railway sleepers, Kate's research represents a significant advancement in Australia's understanding of worker safety in this specialized field.
In her presentation, Kate will provide valuable insights into her project, including the methodologies used and the key findings uncovered. By shedding light on the occupational hazards associated with FFU railway sleeper drilling, Kate's work has the potential to drive meaningful improvements in workplace safety practices. Don't miss this opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from Kate's expertise and contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding worker health and safety.
We are also thrilled to have Jack Crawford Consultant Occupational Hygiene, Environmental & Risk Management will also provide some project information.

Armed with post-graduate qualifications in Occupational Hygiene and Health and Safety, Kate boasts a wealth of experience across diverse sectors, including rail, construction, and transport. Her passion for safeguarding worker health is palpable, exemplified by her recent ground breaking project at RMIT. Focused on investigating dust exposure during railway sleeper drilling, Kate's meticulous research not only contributed invaluable insights to occupational health practices but also garnered her recognition on the Vice-Chancellor’s List for Academic Excellence. With an unwavering dedication to excellence, Kate's career journey is defined by a relentless pursuit of enhancing workplace health and safety standards. Her extensive industry expertise, coupled with her boundless enthusiasm, positions her as a dynamic force within the occupational health landscape. As she continues to spearhead initiatives aimed at promoting healthier work environments, Kate remains an inspiring figure, driving positive change and setting new benchmarks for excellence in Occupational Health and Safety.
“As Occupational Hygienists, our job is to make sure the work environment is as safe as possible for the workers. We achieve this even with practical restraints and business restrictions. Which ultimately makes the work easier and safer for everyone. But who is making the Hygienist job easier?
Having visited many sites I have noticed a common thing, the frustration of ensuring that all the small fiddly equipment is present. The simple solution is a case that can carry all this small equipment.
However, I do understand that not everyone does the same work and jobs can change day to day. I understand that our equipment can and does get damaged on-site. I understand we can carry the same equipment but have different makes and sizes.
So this has led me to the development of this carry case. It has interchangeable and customizable slots to efficiently and easily carry everything you need when you're on site. It is made of a durable easily obtainable case with 3D-printed, multi-option internal plastic slots that allow for customization and future development.
This case is as flexible as the Hygienist who uses them. I will demonstrate my builds to date at the SA chapter meeting."
