Real Time Occupational Monitoring of Nurses and Midwives for Nitrous Oxide Exposure

Anaesthetic gasses are frequently overlooked or neglected as potential occupational hazards. Exposure monitoring in surgical and clinical spaces is made more challenging by infection control requirements, patient safety and privacy issues, leading to less frequent focus on critical heath-care workers. This study uses novel real-time monitoring devices worn by nurses and midwives to assess exposure to a common anaesthetic gas, nitrous oxide, during birthing procedures. Worker exposure is contrasted to static measurements “at source” using high resolution devices, and controls discussed in an environment where intervention and alterations to procedure presents significant setting specific obstacles.
