Breathe Freely Australia (BFA) aims to prevent dust-related occupational lung disease, such as silicosis, in workers, through education & awareness of safe work practices to control exposures.
Breathe Freely Australia is an adaption of the highly successful UK Breathe Freely initiative developed by the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS). The UK Breathe Freely is aimed at reducing occupational lung disease in the UK which causes significant debilitating ill-health and an estimated 13,000 deaths per year. In 2019, the BOHS generously allowed the AIOH to develop the Breathe Freely Australia program, to meet Australian industry needs. It is about raising awareness both of the problem and how to do something about it. We can protect workers’ health and prevent most of these diseases and deaths. It is not just "the right thing to do", it is good for business as well.
RESP-FIT is a national respirator protective equipment (RPE) fit testing training and accreditation program developed to improve the competency of fit testers against both the Australian and international ISO respirator standards for fit testing. RESP-FIT was developed by the AIOH hrough close collaboration with many industry stakeholders such as:
→ Current RPE fit testers.
→ State & Territory WHS/OHS Regulators.
→ RPE Manufacturers and Distributors.
→ Industry, workers and members of the AIOH.
Our goal is to protect worker's health by ensuring the respirator, the last line of defence against dust, chemicals or pathogens, can fit properly and prevent leakages causing exposures to the contaminated air.
The AIOH Foundation has been established to promote the principles of occupational hygiene in the prevention and control of occupational diseases in Australian workplaces.
Part of the rationale for our establishment by the AIOH is that the understanding critical principles of occupational hygiene, namely anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of environmental workplace hazards is not well understood in many industries. Widespread application of occupational hygiene principles will result in great advances in the prevention and control of workplace diseases in Australia.
The Foundation awards grants organisations with projects that will help achieve our purpose of promoting the principles of occupational hygiene in the prevention and control of occupational diseases in Australian workplaces.
The EHG working group has been an initiative brought to the AIOH by a young and up and coming career driven member The EHG is open to AIOH members who are students, Associate and Provisional members as well as non members interested in occupational hygiene careers. the idea behind the EHG is a space for young hygienist to network, knowledge share and explore pathways in becoming a COH.
We encourage members to please invite your hygiene peers or anyone interested in the hygiene profession to join, we have a lot of great events lined up for 2023 and beyond!
