MASTERCLASS 2024 -Investigation of Workplace Lighting Complaints
Date: 18th September 2024 Time: 4.00pm ACST | 4.30PM AEST | 2.30pm AWST (To check your local time click here)
Indoor lighting technology is rapidly advancing, and there are multiple health, safety and productivity implications of exposure to artificial and natural light in the workplace. Health hazards include visual disturbance, circadian rhythm disruption, potential macular degeneration and, indirectly, musculoskeletal stress and fatigue. Modern building design specifies a range of general lighting parameters, but a poor fit of “work and vision” for individuals and tasks is often suboptimal leading to complaints.
This masterclass provides a holistic view of factors influencing complaints and evidence-based approaches that can be used by hygienists and other occupational health professionals to understand light exposure and manage complaints.
Bruno is an occupational physician with a special interest in work and vision. He has written a number of guidance documents for international contexts and has refined conceptual models that take into consideration visual anatomy and physiology, as well as indoor environmental factors. He has also developed technology for investigation of light sources in the occupational visual field.
Dino is a Past-President of AIOH and along with Bruno and Dr So Young Lee wrote the Lighting Chapter for the forthcoming edition of the AIOH Book “Occupational Health and Hygiene”. This chapter addresses blue light exposure and makes reference to building design criteria.
