About this event

Discussion Points:

  • Current PFOS safe dose estimates are widely divergent; the Alliance for Risk Assessment (ARA) opened a call for scientists interested in a resolution.
  • An international committee was formed to shepherd three independent science teams to attempt a resolution (29 scientists from 9 different countries).
  • Current epidemiologic data cannot form a reliable basis for a PFOS safe dose.
  • Based on dose-response data from five laboratory animal studies, the provisional range for the PFOA safe dose is 20 to 100 ng/kg-day.

About the Speaker

Michael L. Dourson, Ph.D., DABT, FATS, FSRA

Michael Dourson is a board-certified toxicologist with a PhD in toxicology from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine. He currently serves as President/Director of the 501c3 nonprofit organisation Toxicology Excellence for Risk Assessment (TERA). Prior to this, he was a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Administrator at the US EPA, and a Professor in the Risk Science Center at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine.  Previously, he also worked at TERA for 20 years and US EPA for 15 years.

He has been awarded the Arnold J. Lehman award from the Society of Toxicology, the International Achievement Award by the International Society of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, 4 bronze medals from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and 5 paper-of-the-year awards from several specialty sections of the Society of Toxicology.  He has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (i.e., FATS) and as a Fellow for the Society for Risk Analysis (i.e., FSRA).

He has co-published more than 150 papers on risk assessment methods or chemical-specific analyses, co-authored well over 100 government risk assessment documents, made over 150 invited presentations to a variety of organizations, and chaired over 150 sessions at scientific meetings and independent peer reviews. He has been elected to multiple officer positions in the American Board of Toxicology (President), the Society of Toxicology (presidency of 3 specialty sections), the Society for Risk Analysis (Secretary), and the International Society for Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology (currently as its Vice President).  He is also currently the Executive Director of the Toxicology Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization with a vision to help our public understand the essentials of toxicology. In addition to numerous appointments on government panels, such as EPA’s Science Advisory Board, he is a current member on the editorial board of the journal Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology and the newly formed International Journal of Toxicology and Regulatory Policy
