Mulch Working Group Analysis of mulch for asbestos using AS 4964:2004

Background – Australian Standard 4964:2004 Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples summarises the methodology for the qualitative identification of asbestos (chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite) in bulk samples
(e.g. commercial products such as asbestos cement and vinyl floor tiles) by polarised light microscopy (PLM) and dispersion staining (DS). AS 4964 provides guidance for analysing non-homogeneous samples such as soils and ores.

Analysis of mulch for asbestos using AS 4964:2004

Background
Australian Standard 4964:2004 Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples summarises the methodology for the qualitative identification of asbestos (chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite) in bulk samples
(e.g. commercial products such as asbestos cement and vinyl floor tiles) by polarised light microscopy (PLM) and dispersion staining (DS). AS 4964 provides guidance for analysing non-homogeneous samples such as soils and ores.
As mulch is not dissimilar to soil, the principles of analysis for soil largely apply to mulch. The following information is based on AS 4964 to provide supplementary guidance on how to apply the methodology specified in AS 4964 when analysing mulch samples. This information is intended to improve consistency and to assist laboratories undertaking analysis of mulch, and the reporting of results. The reader is referred to AS 4964 for details on the specifics of the analytical method.
